Lucius Beston, a village chief in a quiet Malawian community, had always been a devout Christian. Born and raised in the church, he grew up surrounded by its teachings. However, as he matured, questions began to trouble his heart, leading him to seek clarity beyond the confines of his faith.
One of the key issues that unsettled him was the portrayal of Jesus as God in the church’s sermons. When Mary was referred to as the “Mother of God,” Beston’s confusion deepened. How could the Creator of the heavens and earth have a mother? These contradictions gnawed at him and sparked a deep desire for understanding.
Another concern was the unequal distribution of wealth in his community. He observed that it was the poor who were often asked to contribute financially to the church, while the wealthy remained unaffected. This imbalance left him troubled. However, when he observed Islam, he was struck by the fairness of zakat—the obligation for the wealthy to give to the poor. This concept of social justice, where the rich took responsibility for the welfare of the needy, touched his heart deeply.
Furthermore, Beston admired Islam’s emphasis on cleanliness, both physical and spiritual. The discipline and purity of Muslims were qualities he felt were missing from his previous faith, and he began to feel drawn toward Islam.
In February 2024, after much reflection, Lucius Beston made the life-changing decision to embrace Islam. However, his journey was far from easy. His community, angered by his conversion, sought to punish him. When it came time for him to be elevated to the position of group village head, they denied him the honor and instead gave the role to another individual.
Despite these challenges, Beston remained steadfast in his faith. Rather than retreat in the face of opposition, he saw it as an opportunity to share the beauty of Islam with others. He began invitin knowledgeable Muslims to his village to help educate the community in a respectful and clear manner.
Beston’s resilience and unwavering commitment to his new faith became a source of inspiration to many. Though he faced rejection and hardship, he never wavered in his belief, standing firm in the truth that Islam had revealed to him.
