Leaving behind spiritual manipulation in search of sincere faith

An elderly man who grew up under the teachings of a church spent much of his spiritual life confined by one dominating message: “Give an offering, or you will not benison. The eyes of pastors and fellow worshippers would turn toward one’s pocket, and for those who didn’t give, judgment followed in the form of harsh looks and whispered blame.

Over time, questions began to stir in his heart. Why was the worship of God so closely tied to money? Why did failing to give an offering lead to exclusion and shame? These questions weighed heavily on him, eventually leading to deep disillusionment. He gradually distanced himself from the church, yearning for a place where worship was pure and untainted by financial pressure.

One day, at a time when he had nearly lost all hope of finding spiritual truth, he was visited by a team of outreach. They came with a message of Islam, delivered with humility and respect. With a heart full of longing, he asked a question that had haunted him for years: “In Islam, if someone does not give charity, are they also excluded?”

The answer touched him deeply. He was told that in Islam, giving is an act of worship not a form of coercion. Obligatory charity (Zakat) is only required from those who are financially able, while voluntary charity (sadaqah) is encouraged but never forced. A person is never turned away from the mosque or isolated from the community because they cannot give. Worship in Islam is based on sincerity, not wealth.

Tears of joy ran down his face. For the first time, he saw a path of worship that was pure, free from pressure and spiritual manipulation. Looking back on years of pain and emotional burden, he found the courage to say, “This is the truth I have been searching for. Today, I accept the religion of Islam.”
