From Confusion to Clarity: Ntajo Abbas’ Journey to Islam in Ghana.

Meet Ntajo Abbas, a 30 year old man in the Northern Region of Ghana. Abbas is a new Muslim and a farmer by profession.

He joined Islam when the iERA team visited his village about two years ago to give a mass dawah.

He reverted alongside some young men of his community.

His passion for the religion grew exponentially when he began to ask more questions about his newly found faith.

He usually asks questions pertaining to what a surah of the Qur’an meant and how should he recite specific words he encounters with regards to Islam.

Abbas’ story is unique because, of all the members of the community that embraced Islam, his thirst for the religion has become unquenchable.

During a new Muslim session, he began to ask deep religious questions that resulted in him being enthusiastic and worried at the same time due to how ignorant he and his people are about the world out of their culture.

He became confused with regards to what was religion and what was culture, What was he supposed to practice and what was he supposed to reject. He once told us about how their elders had shaped their thinking into believing that Islam belonged to a particular tribe in Ghana known as the Dagbanis and therefore, his tribe should also hold strongly to their idolatry.

While studying with the team, he learnt sura al Kaafiroon and its meaning and would recite it when his family members want to force him back to idolatry and would explain its meaning as well.

With the help of the iERA team, a lot of misconceptions were cleared for him and he has been a devoted Muslim till date.

He once told our iERA team in Ghana that, his tribe has a practice where if someone is to die, among the traditions they perform on the funeral day is to get a soothsayer to communicate with the dead to find out what was the cause of the death or who even cased the demise of the dead. He further indicated that, there is a mark on specific people at birth that indicated that it was their destiny to become soothsayers when they grow up and that he is destined to become a soothsayer.

The team clarified to him that Islam does not condone such a belief and that he should abandon it and devote his life fully to the worship of Allah.

Currently, Abbas has enrolled in a local madrasa to further his education and to strengthen his faith in Islam.

He hopes Allah grants him the knowledge of the religion and to become a great scholar for his people to guided them on the straight path.
