iERA Nigeria:  A Heart Drawn to Truth

The midday sun cast long shadows on the bustling roadside as we moved from one stall to another, engaging with people during our Street Dawah outreach.

Among the vendors, we met a woman seated behind a small table, her hands busy arranging her goods. Her face bore the lines of experience, her eyes watchful yet welcoming.

The team approached with smiles, introducing ourselves and the purpose of our visit.

As they shared the message of Islam through the GORAP method, they noticed something unusual, though she wasn’t Muslim, there was a softness in her demeanor, an openness that many did not initially show.

She listened intently, nodding at the words of the Duat, her expression shifting between curiosity and deep thought.

Sensing her interest, the team took a moment to address her concerns, the invisible barriers preventing her from taking the final step towards Islam.

Her eyes welled up with emotion, and we realized—this was not a matter of logic for her.

It was something deeper, something tugging at her heart.

The Duat reassured her that embracing Islam is a journey, one that should be taken with sincerity and conviction. “Reflect on what we have said,” they encouraged her. “Let your heart and mind settle on the truth.” With that, we left her with words of encouragement and a silent prayer that Allah would guide her.

No sooner had the team walked away than her phone rang. It was her.

“Come back,” she said urgently. “A man is here, speaking to me about Islam. I want you to talk to him.”

The Duat wasted no time, returning to find a young man standing near her stall.

His posture was hesitant, yet his curiosity was evident. He was the son of an evangelist, a background steeped in Christian teachings. Yet, something had drawn him to question.

As the Duat began speaking with him, his eyes widened with every revelation. “This is my first time knowing that Muslims believe in Jesus Christ and God Almighty,” he admitted, his voice tinged with both amazement and disbelief.

The team extended a copy of the Qur’an to him, hoping he would read and discover the truth for himself. But fear crept into his face. “My family…” he hesitated. “They won’t approve.”

Understanding his situation, the team did not press him.

Instead, they handed him smaller pamphlets—bits of light that could guide him without arousing suspicion.

He accepted them gratefully, clutching them as if they were keys to a door he had just discovered.

As the two groups parted ways, the Duat saw the woman watching us, her emotions still apparent.

Perhaps, seeing another non-Muslim engage with Islam strengthened her own conviction. Perhaps, her heart had already decided, waiting only for the courage to act.

We walked away knowing one thing: a seed had been planted—two seeds, in fact. And with Allah’s guidance, they would grow in their own time.
