As thousands of football fans made their way through Mexico City ahead of the match between Mexico and South Africa, one unexpected encounter turned an ordinary train ride into a meaningful dawah opportunity.
Among the supporters was Luis, a local rapper proudly wearing a traditional Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling mask. Curious about the Muslims handing out free Spanish translations of the Qur’an, he gladly accepted a copy and stopped to talk.
The conversation began with a simple question about God. Luis explained that, regardless of culture or language, he had always believed there is only one God, even if different people call Him by different names. His sincerity opened the door to a deeper discussion about Islam’s central message of pure monotheism.
The team explained that Muslims believe God is unique, independent, beyond His creation, and unlike anything in existence. They also shared Islam’s deep love and respect for Jesus (peace be upon him), while clarifying that he is a mighty prophet and messenger of God—not God Himself.
Luis admitted that he knew very little about Islam, but listened attentively as the conversation unfolded. He was encouraged to read the Qur’an, especially the chapter of Mary (Surah Maryam), to discover the beautiful account of Jesus and his miraculous birth from the Islamic perspective.
As they spoke, it became clear that Luis was a spiritually-minded person searching for truth. Before they parted ways, he reflected on the purpose of the campaign. While football brings people together for a game, he remarked that the team’s mission was even greater—bringing people together through the belief in the One True God.
Alhamdulillah, what began as a chance meeting on a train became an opportunity to share the message of Islam with an open heart. May Allah guide Luis through the Qur’an, increase him in understanding, and make this conversation a means of lasting guidance. Ameen.
