Portuguese becomes Muslim

Antonio is Portuguese. Until six months ago, he was a Catholic, but after intensive research,
he embraced Islam. His first encounter with Islam was through the media. It began as early
as 9/11, sparking his interest in understanding what connection Islam might have with the
attack.
Initially, he held anti-Muslim views and had a negative perception of Islam, largely due to the
media portrayal. However, this changed when he got to know Muslims and began exploring
Islam from a religious perspective.

After his thorough research and engagement with Muslims, Antonio had many questions.
This led him to online platforms, including YouTube, where he explored Islamic topics. In
fact, our Outreach Specialist Sertac Odabas conducted a live session with him, during which
his questions were answered. Just a few weeks later, Antonio embraced Islam.
The challenges he faced after his conversion were significant, but with the support and
guidance of iERA mentors, he managed them exceptionally well. His parents also played a
crucial role in his journey; initially, they had some concerns, but today, his mother even buys
halal meat specifically for him.

After his Shahada, Antonio attended the iERA Retreat 2024, where he learned how to pray,
perform ablution, and recite Surah Al-Fatiha. According to him, this experience was
transformative. He has gained extensive knowledge about Islam since his Shahada, and the
sense of community at the retreat further strengthened him. Antonio wholeheartedly
recommends the retreat to anyone starting out on their journey, as it helps build both
intellectual and spiritual connections with Allah.
