Meet Hassan, a resident of Luweero District in Uganda, who embraced Islam in his 80s after a transformative encounter with iERA Uganda duats (Islamic teachers). Once a devout Protestant known as Paul, Hassan was deeply convinced by the daees’ explanation of Islam, especially regarding Prophet Isa (Jesus) as a prophet and the oneness of God. Feeling certain of the truth, he recited the Shahada (Islamic declaration of faith) and requested a Quran to guide him on his new spiritual journey.
Hassan recalls the pivotal moment when he met the iERA duats at his home while resting. Initially, he was reluctant to engage with these “strangers.” However, curious to challenge their beliefs, he decided to listen. Despite his conviction that Protestantism was the true religion, the verses from the Quran on God’s oneness and the correct ways of worship—also referenced in the Bible—struck a chord with him. “I saw no reason to remain in a religion that does not worship according to the holy books,” Hassan shared, expressing gratitude for finally seeing the light, albeit later in life.
Interestingly, Hassan was raised in a Muslim household, as his father was Muslim. However, under the influence of his mother, who discouraged him from following Islamic practices, Hassan grew up believing that Protestantism was the true path.
Due to mobility challenges, Hassan has invited the daees to his home to teach him more about Islam. Committed to spreading the truth he discovered, he plans to encourage his only son to embrace Islam so they can learn and worship together
