From darkness to light: The journey of Margaret Pilingu

In a remote Malawian village, Margaret Pilingu was a formidable figure, revered as the leader of Gule Wamkulu, a secret ancestral cult.

Villagers believed she had a divine connection, capable of invoking spirits, offering protection, and bestowing blessings through ancient rituals and magic.

But when iERA du’aat arrived in her village, calling people to worship Allah alone, Margaret’s life took an unexpected turn. At first, she dismissed their message, yet something about their words unsettled her.

One day, out of curiosity, she attended an iERA class. That day, they recited:

“And who is more astray than one who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware?”
(Qur’an 46:5)

The verse pierced her heart. Doubt crept in. That night, she lay awake, questioning everything she had believed. “How can this teaching be false?” she wondered.

Days passed, and as she continued attending the classes, the truth became undeniable. Then, in a moment of courage and conviction, Margaret made the boldest decision of her life—she embraced Islam, declaring with unwavering faith:

La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasulullah.

The news of her conversion sent shockwaves through the village. Some mocked her, others were furious. “How can the leader of Gule Wamkulu abandon her ancestors?” they asked. Threats followed, but Margaret stood firm.

“I was lost, but now I am free,” she declared.

Leaving behind her past, she dedicated herself to learning Islam, praying, and spreading the message of Tawheed.

With every prostration, she whispered a heartfelt plea:
“Ya Allah, guide my people as You have guided me.”

May Allah strengthen her faith and make her a beacon of guidance for others.
