A Former Catholic Shares Why He Embraced Islam

Standing before a gathering, a Muslim speaker began with a simple request. He was not there to collect donations or ask for financial support. Instead, he invited those listening to give him something far more valuable—a few moments of their attention to learn about Islam.

He shared that he was once a Catholic, explaining that his journey to Islam began with a sincere search for truth. Like many others, he admitted that his understanding of Islam had once been shaped by common misconceptions. He had heard people describe it as a religion associated with violence and conflict. However, after studying Islam for himself, he discovered something entirely different.

He found a faith centered on the worship of one God alone—a faith that clearly teaches who deserves worship, how to worship, and how to live according to the Creator’s guidance. He explained that the God worshipped in Islam is the same God worshipped by the prophets, including Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Prophet Musa (Moses), Prophet Nuh (Noah), Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist), Prophet Isa (Jesus), and finally Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The speaker emphasized that Islam teaches believers to remain conscious of Allah at all times, obeying Him whether they are alone or in public. It was this understanding of sincere devotion and accountability before the Creator that convinced him to embrace Islam.

He also explained the meaning of the word “Islam,” noting that it comes from an Arabic word meaning submission and surrender to the will of Allah. He described Islam as willingly submitting oneself to the guidance and commandments of the Creator. He added that the same linguistic root is connected to the word “salam,” meaning peace, which is why Muslims greet one another with the words, “As-salamu ‘alaykum”—”Peace be upon you.”

Drawing comparisons between Islamic practice and the lives of earlier prophets, he spoke about the respect Muslims have for Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام. He explained that Muslims love and honor Jesus as one of Allah’s greatest messengers and strive to follow the example of all the prophets in worshipping God alone. He highlighted practices such as prostrating in prayer, maintaining personal cleanliness before worship, and observing modesty as examples of traditions shared by the prophets.

Throughout his talk, his message remained consistent: Islam is not a new religion but a continuation of the same message preached by all of Allah’s prophets—a message calling humanity to worship the Creator alone and to live according to His guidance.

His story served as a reminder that sincere study and open dialogue can challenge misconceptions and help people discover the true teachings of Islam. For many in attendance, the talk offered an opportunity to look beyond stereotypes and reflect on the timeless message of submission to the One God.

May Allah continue to guide hearts to the truth, increase us in beneficial knowledge, and make us among those who sincerely follow His guidance. Ameen.
