A Mother’s Journey: How love and curiosity led Ruth Blas to Islam

For many, the journey to Islam begins with personal curiosity or spiritual searching. For Ruth Blas, it began with something even more powerful — a mother’s love.

Living in Guadalajara, Mexico, Ruth was a devout and active member of a Christian denomination. Her life was deeply rooted in her faith and community. But when her daughter shared her intention to marry a Muslim, Ruth was filled with concern and uncertainty.

She had heard little about Islam and what she had heard left her feeling apprehensive about her daughter’s future.

Rather than let fear or misunderstanding dictate her feelings, Ruth made a bold and life-changing decision: she chose to learn about Islam for herself.

About five years ago, she began visiting a local mosque in Guadalajara. What started as a cautious exploration turned into a spiritual awakening. Despite living over an hour and a half away, Ruth found herself returning to the mosque — not just once in a while, but daily for Dhuhr prayer. The sense of peace, community, and clarity she experienced there kept drawing her back.

Eventually, with conviction and sincerity in her heart, Ruth embraced Islam.

But she didn’t stop there.

Far from being a passive convert, Ruth immersed herself in Islamic learning. She enrolled in multiple courses through iERA Mexico, including GORAP, Christianity & Islam, Step by Step, and New Muslim Support. As her knowledge grew, so did her passion for da’wah.

Ruth soon joined the volunteer team and began traveling across Mexico, delivering talks about Jesus in Islam and offering classes for non-Muslims. She became a guiding light for many, especially for new Muslim women in her community, offering mentorship, encouragement, and faith-based support.

Her dedication, wisdom, and humility have made her a cornerstone of the dawah movement in Guadalajara.

When asked what Islam has brought to her life, Ruth answers with beautiful simplicity:
“Peace and closeness to my Lord.”

Ruth Blas’s story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to discover Islam. Her journey shows that with sincerity, an open heart, and the right support system, anyone — no matter their background or age — can not only find the truth but become a passionate advocate for it.

May Allah continue to bless her efforts and inspire others through her story
