A Profound Change: Mzei Yokaana Finds Yahya

In the quiet, sun-drenched landscape of rural Uganda, Mzei Ssebunnya Yokaana, a man respected for his years and his gentle nature, lived out his 74th year. Though he had long followed the Protestant faith, Mzei Yokaana often felt a subtle, unanswered longing—a deep spiritual yearning for an explanation of God that was utterly clear and universally compelling.

One afternoon, this quiet village peace was punctuated by the approach of a small team. They were iERA Uganda outreach specialists, traversing the dusty paths, engaging with residents to share their message. When they identified Mzei Yokaana’s humble residence, they paused. A courteous knock and a greeting later, the elderly man, with the hospitality typical of his community, welcomed them in.

The specialists did not rush. They respectfully asked Mzei Yokaana for permission to explain a fundamental concept: the oneness of God, why that one God is uniquely worthy of worship, and the proper way to worship Him as promised by all the prophets.

Yokaana looked at the earnest faces of his visitors. His deep-set eyes held a lifetime of observation. He posed a simple, yet weighty, question: “Are you Muslims?” When the outreach workers confirmed that they were, Mzei Yokaana gave a slow, deliberate nod. “Then go on,” he told them, “and explain your issues.”

As they spoke, detailing the uncompromised unity of the Creator, the universal message of Islam, and the clarity of its guidance, a powerful wave of recognition washed over the elder. It wasn’t just information; it was conviction. The explanation they provided was structured, rational, and profoundly peaceful. It resonated with the missing piece he hadn’t even realized he was searching for.

When the specialists finished, the silence in the room was heavy with spiritual import. Mzei Yokaana leaned forward, his voice steady with newfound certainty. He shared that he had been waiting for a better religion with proper and convincing explanations, and now, here it was. Without hesitation, the 74-year-old embraced Islam. He took the Shahada—the sacred declaration of faith—and, marking his new beginning, adopted the beautiful and meaningful name of Yahya.

That quiet afternoon knock did not just introduce new concepts; it heralded a profound spiritual transformation, giving the elderly Yokaana a fresh start and a clear path forward as Yahya.
