Clad in the distinctive Nyau costume, he would join the sacred dances, believing fully in the spiritual power of the tradition.
However, life often unfolds in unexpected ways. One day, a group of brothers who had embraced Islam came to visit him. They did not come with judgment or harsh words, but with kindness and patience. They sat with Fanuwero, sharing heartfelt conversations about the true purpose of human life. They explained how Allah, the One and Only Creator, made us to worship Him alone, guiding us to live with meaning, peace, and submission to His will.
They spoke of Islam’s beauty — a faith rooted in mercy, compassion, and clear guidance. They emphasized the inner peace that comes from surrendering to Allah and living according to His teachings. The words stirred something deep within Fanuwero’s heart. The questions he had long carried suddenly found answers. The longing for truth and purpose became undeniable.
Moved by this new understanding, Brother Fanuwero made a courageous choice — one that would change his life forever. With a heavy yet hopeful heart, he decided to abandon the Nyau traditions that once defined him. In a powerful moment of transformation, he gathered every Nyau costume, mask, and ritual item he had kept over the years and set them on fire. The flames symbolized not just destruction, but a cleansing rebirth, leaving behind the old to embrace a new path of faith.
Then, with humility and joy, he took the Shahadah — the declaration of faith in Islam — affirming his belief in the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). This was the beginning of a new chapter, a journey filled with hope, devotion, and spiritual growth.
Today, Brother Fanuwero walks confidently on the path of Islam, inspiring many in Sukwa Village. His story is a testament to the power of guidance, the mercy of Allah, and the strength found in sincere faith. May Allah continue to bless him, keep him steadfast, and expand his knowledge and love for the deen.
