At 84 years old, Muzei Christopher should have been surrounded by the comfort and care of his lifelong religious community. Instead, he found himself facing a cold and heartbreaking betrayal.
Having spent his entire life practicing Christianity and exploring different denominations in search of true belonging, he was often misunderstood and left feeling alienated. As old age caught up with him and his physical energy faded, he could no longer make the journey to attend church services. Rather than showing pastoral compassion, his church leaders delivered a shocking threat: because he had stopped attending, they would no longer help him in any way—and they would refuse to bury him when he passed away.

Deeply hurt and angry at being abandoned in his twilight years, Christopher’s path crossed with da’ees from iERA. They sat with the elderly man and explained the clear, logical truthfulness of Islam. For Christopher, who had always heard that Muslims were famously friendly, trustworthy, and deeply supportive of one another, the contrast was undeniable.
Gathering his courage, the 84-year-old decided he would no longer stay where he was rejected. He took his Shahada (testimony of faith), embraced Islam with full conviction, and beautifully adopted the name Yusuf.
When shocked members of his former church called to interrogate him about his conversion, Yusuf stood his ground with the dignity of a man who had finally found his worth. He boldly told them that becoming a Muslim was his own desire and independent decision after his own church leaders disowned him.
Today, Yusuf has traded his deep disappointment for a heart full of hope. He no longer fears being left alone, living peacefully in the certainty that his new Muslim brothers and sisters will honor, cherish, and stand by him both in this life and the next.
