She Chose Hijab Despite the Challenges

Sister Alefa Dambo from Phalombe accepted Islam after visiting one of her family members in Mangochi, where she stayed for almost four months. During her stay, she observed how Muslim women dressed modestly by wearing hijab and covering their bodies respectfully. Since Mangochi is a district with a large Muslim population, she saw Islamic practices being followed openly in daily life. The modesty, discipline, and character of the Muslim women impressed her greatly and inspired her to learn more about Islam.

As time passed, Alefa became interested in the teachings of Islam and eventually made the decision to embrace the religion. She felt peace in her heart and believed that Islam was the right path for her. After returning to her home village, she later met a man who wanted to marry her, and they eventually got married. However, after the marriage, she discovered that her husband was a Christian and did not support her Islamic faith.

Her husband began stopping her from going to the masjid and did not want her to wear hijab. Despite the pressure, Alefa remained strong and continued practicing her religion. She kept wearing her hijab because she believed it was part of her faith and identity as a Muslim woman. Sadly, her husband became very harsh and repeatedly burned her hijabs in an attempt to force her to stop wearing them. This painful situation continued for some time, but Alefa did not give up her faith.

Eventually, she decided to divorce him in order to protect her religion and live peacefully as a Muslim. Later, she met a dawah team from iERA, who encouraged and supported her during her difficult time. Today, Sister Alefa is one of the women helping new Muslim sisters understand the importance of hijab. She teaches them that hijab is not only a form of modesty but also a symbol of dignity, protection, and respect for Muslim women.
