For a very long time, Uwase had lived as a miserable wife to Nkurunziza. Their marriage had been nothing but quarrels and heartache due to his drinking problem.
Nkurunziza made a lot of money but had very little to show for it in his family’s upkeep because he wasted it all on beer. His actions resulted in constant fights with his wife.
One day, Claire noticed that it had been a while since her husband came home drunk, and his behavior and attitude was also changing.
As much as she was curious about this change, she was wary of asking her husband about it lest he resorted back to his old nasty ways. So she resolved to remain silent and enjoy the calm.
After a while, Nkurunzinza decided to share some news with his wife. He told her that he had embraced Islam for a while now and had been reluctant to tell her because he knew how much she despised Islam.
He further explained that he was inspired to make the change following the efforts of one of his former drinking buddies and best friend, who had reverted to Islam. His best friend had stopped drinking and was now a daee and he admired the change he had seen in him and wanted the same for himself; so he too embraced Islam.
Astonished, his wife asked him if Islam was the reason why he didn’t drink anymore. “Yes it is. I stopped because I became Muslim and Islam prohibits it, and I feel so much peaceful now,” he responded.
“Well then, call your fellow Muslims to make me one too!” she said. The following day she also took her Shahadah.
