At a tender age, a crisis of faith led Florence to a searching question: what was the true purpose of her spirit? Her Christian upbringing offered no solace. It was a kind friend who gently showed her the goodness of Islam, and in that kindness, Florence found her answers. Her heart settled, her soul found peace, and she embraced her new faith along with a new name, Jamiilah.
But her journey was not a straight path. When illness brought her back to the family home, she found herself on a collision course with her past. She spoke to her father, hoping he would understand the peace she had found. Instead, he was consumed by bitter anger. To him, her conversion was a betrayal of everything he held dear. He demanded she strip herself of her Islamic faith and return to Christianity. To avoid clashing with the man she loved and respected, Jamiilah made a heartbreaking choice. She relented and once again became Florence, putting aside the name and the faith that had brought her such serenity.
It was during this difficult time that her path crossed with two duats from iERA Uganda as she walked to her garden. They did not know her story, yet they spoke of the oneness of God, a truth that resonated deep within her, a forgotten echo from a past she had tried to leave behind.

At first, a doubt crept into her mind. Could this truly be a return to Islam? She had always believed that one must go to a mosque to formally embrace the faith. The duats, sensing her hesitation, gently corrected her misconception. They explained that faith resides in the heart, and the declaration of belief can be made in any place, at any time, under the vast sky of God’s creation.
Her other fear was not so easily dismissed. She worried that her father would again cast her out if she converted. But the duats spoke words that were like cool water on a parched soul. “God is omnipotent,” they said, “He can simplify for you, your father.” Those words gave her courage. They reminded her that the One who created her could also soften her father’s heart.
With renewed conviction and the guidance of the duats, Jamiilah rejoined Islam, and this time, the echo of her faith did not fade. It became the vibrant sound of her journey, a testament to a soul that had found its way back home.
