Sometimes, the journey to discovering Islam begins with something as simple as a greeting. For them, a chance encounter with the iERA team became the beginning of a life changing journey. What started with a warm Islamic greeting, As-salaamu ‘alaykum, soon opened the door to a meaningful conversation about Islam.
As we explained the meaning of the greeting and its message of peace, mercy, and blessings, the two young men became increasingly interested. We shared more about Islam and gently explained how a person can embrace the faith. However, one of them raised a sincere question that revealed his concern about becoming a Muslim.
He asked, “Can I really practise Islam with these rasta dreadlocks on my head?” His question reflected a fear that his current appearance and lack of knowledge might prevent him from becoming a good Muslim.
We explained that learning Islam is a gradual journey, just like a baby learning to walk. Nobody expects a newborn baby to walk immediately; similarly, a new Muslim does not need to know everything from the beginning. What matters is the willingness to learn, grow, and practise Islam step by step.
These words encouraged them, and by the mercy of Allah, they embraced Islam. Their story reminds us that da‘wah requires wisdom, patience, and compassion. Sometimes, a simple greeting and a sincere conversation can become the beginning of a beautiful journey towards guidance.
